Cochran County, Texas
As far as I can recall, we moved to Cochran County from Childress. We moved in a Model T Ford with a cloth top. I think it was in 1926 or 1927. We moved to homestead. Had to do a lot of grubbing,
but the grubs burned almost as good as the cow chips. Either way, the fire made some pretty good biscuits.
Some of the older friends have gone or passed away. Of course, I have been gone from Morton for over thirty years. I still consider it my home.
I left Morton in 1952 and went to Dickinson, North Dakota. This where I met my bride. Together we reared five sons and two daughters. my younger son died at the age of sixteen.
I have ten grandchildren whom I am very proud. Of course, my family has spread out. My older one, his wife and two sons are living in El Paso. Three of my sons now reside in Denver. My two daughters still live here in Dickinson.
I recall the Watts family lived a short way east of us and beyond that the Lytle family. Then Mr. Cloud and further the Igos, the Brock Hodnet; South was Carl Williams. At one time, my uncle Roy Shields lived in the same
place. Mr. Yeary lived further south, not far from the Fred Crows. They were all good neighbors.
I remember one year when the leaf worms had gotten bad in the cotton fields. We kids used to herd Mrs. Yeary's turkeys in the field and they ate up practically all the worms. At least we had a fairly decent crop that year.
A lot of years have passed since I have lived at Cooks Corner. Many faces and names have escaped my memory, yet those memories are still fond. I look forward some day to having a Cook family reunion somewhere in that area,
but it may never happen.
