Cochran County, Texas
Floyd and Ludie Cooper came to Morton from Ralls, Texas in 1923. They had four children at this time; Olen, Montene, Junior, and Faye. They located on a farm three miles northeast of town. The family of six lived in a two room house used a pot bellied
coal burning stove for heat and a wood burning stove for cooking. They pumped water by hand for a year before getting a windmill. Two more daughters, Jean and Betty, came along and as the family grew, they added a little more area to the
house, which consisted of a shed room on the back.
The family bought their farm for what would seem like a small sum this day in time, but in 1923 it was a very large sum. They survived the dust storms, crop failures, etc., but managed to make the payments and hang
on to their labor of land. Floyd did not own a tractor until 1941. He farmed his land using horses and a sassy span of mules called Jack and Tobe. The Coopers, like most all others had very little. They managed to
make ends meet by growning their own food, milking cows, and raising chickens. They also sold enough cream, milk, and eggs to help buy their staple foods.
Olen and Montene started school in a little country school called Minnie Veal, located where the old Floyd Rowland home stands. They went to school in town in 1925 in the old red brick scool building. Junior, Faye, Jean and
Betty all started school in Morton. Junior and Betty graduated from Morton High School.
This day and time life was very simple. Families made their own entertainment and friends and neighbors were visited occasionally. Floyd and Ludie were in church regularly. They joined the First Missionary Baptist Church
just two weeks after it was organized. Floyd was an ordained deacon. Floyd and his mules helped build the rock portion of the church that still stands today.
Some of the Cooper children reside in Morton and others are living in surrounding areas. Olen and Lettie, Junior and Katy, Montene and Virgil (Willis) are now residing in Morton. Faye (Miller) lives with her son Doug Miller, in Coleman, Texas.
Jean and Wayne (Kindred) live in Amarillo, and Betty and Fred (Porterfield) live in Lovington, New Mexico. Olen has four children: Melvin, Juanice, Sue and Irwin. Montene has three children: Ginger, Bill, and S. V. Jr.
Junior has two children: George III and Jerry Don. Faye has four children" Dewayne, Doug, Deborah, and Denise. Jean has three children: Sandra, Kenneth, and Carolyn. Margi, Randall, and Tommy are Betty's children.
Floyd passed away in 1966 at the age of 76 and Ludie passed away in 1986 at the age of 93. They had six children, nineteen great-grandchildren and thirty-nine great great children.
