Cochran County, Texas
Carlton Elliott "Luke" Lups (1/26/11-1/21/86) and Nettie Louise "Dugan" (8/20/17) were one of the most sustaining, hard working, and respected couples in Cochran County. Married in 1938, while Luke was attending Texas Tech and football letterman, they moved to Houston in 1939.
Luke was an electrician working on destroyers at Port Arthur during WWII and was in the National Guard. Howell Ray was born at Port Arthur in 1943 and Carla Jane in 1943 at Orange.
Moving to Morton in 1948, they started several businesses. Following in her mother's footsteps, Dugan owned and operated a motel. Cartlton had a car lot, painted, and did electrical work. He later started Luper's Tire Service in 1953 in half
of a furniture store his mother-in-law, Cora King, owned. The business is still in operation today run by Ray. Jerry Greer was born in Morton in 1949.
Luke contributed time and energy to Lions Club, Scouts, band boosters, Methodist Church and to community service projects. Luke retired in 1980 because of illness and passed away in January of 1986. Dugan was also active in the 1936 Studay Club, Wesleyen Service Guild, school
activities, Cub and Boy Scouts and the Methodist Church.
Living in Morton, Ray and Nancy Luper have three children, Joel Ray, Carrie Ann and Kathryn (Kathy) Dyan.
Jane is married to David Nobles and lives in Slidell, Louisiana. She is the mother of three children, Kevin, born in 1967, Coy, born in 1970, and Heather born in 1974.
Jerry is now living in Morton and has two children, Amie born in 1970 and Justin born in 1973.
Dugan once commented that she wanted an even dozen grandchildren, but after three were born in 1970, she changed her mind and said, "but not all at once."
