Beldsoe's native born citizen paid a visit to his birthplace April 27, 1987. This was the frist visit since the family of Charles E. Newton moved to Idalou in 1927. Charles Jr. was born on Flag Day June 14, 1926
as reported in the Cochran County News issue dated June 17, 1926. Charles Jr. was not only the first child born in the city of Bledsoe, but the first child of this family.
Mr. Newton was a farmer. They moved to Idalou, hoping for better crops in 1927. He was a resident of Rall, Texas. From Ralls, the family moved to Muleshoe then Olton where Dad was employed (at both places) by Higginbotham-Bartlett.
The family moved to Brownwood where Charles Jr. and Robert graduated from high school, then two years of naval service, then back to the South Plains, to Texas Tech. Charles received his BSEE degree in 1949.
He has worked thirty-five years for Westinghouse and is now retired. Vacationing brough him home to Bledsoe.
The Newto name will carry on with his four sons and one grandson. There are two more on the way. They all live in Maryland.
As told to Glynna Merritt
