Cochran County, Texas
The office of sheriff has been provided for under every Texas
constitution. In 1876 the constitution set the term of office for
county sheriff at two years. In an constitutional amendment
passed in 1954 the term was lengthened to four years.
The duties of county sheriff include acting as a conservator of
the peace, executive officer of the county and district courts,
serve writs and processes of the courts, operating the county
jail, maintaining communications with other law enforcement
organizations, and enforcing judgements and laws throughout
the county. In counties with less than 10,000 residents the
sheriff may also serve as ex officio tax assessor-collector
unless voters elect to keep the jobs separate.
