Cochran County: Mary McKnight
Septmeber 17, 2016
The Cochran County Historical Commission (CCHC) and Cochran County Junior Historians (CCJH) were honored to host the great-grandchildren of Chief Quanah Parker as they performed a Comanche blessing on the Quanah Parker Trail Arrow and members of the audience.
Members of the audience on this day included Dr. Lu Ann Aday, CCHC PR Chair; Terry Huckabee, CCHC Chair; Josh Huckabee; Kathy Wilson; Dorothy Barker; Theresa Smith; Cochran County Judge Pat Sabala Henry; Mary Helen McKnight, CCHC Secretary; Cheyenne Barnes, CCJH President; Jordan Barnes, CCJH member; Margaret Loveless; Dick Loveless; Sammie Simpson; and Cecil Amalla.
Dr. Aday gave an evocative narrative of the events that transpired in Cochran County in 1877 as Chief Parker sought to safely escort a party of Kwahada Comanches, who had left the reservation to hunt, back to Fort Sill. Dr. Aday's narrative highlighted the skills and knowledge Chief Parker relied on to safely lead his fellow Comanches back to Fort Sill despite being hunted by Captain Nolan and his Buffalo Soldiers.
